Will it have trackIR support?
« on: August 10, 2003, 08:02:58 AM »
As in native trackIR support like it does in FS2002/4 and FB.

It's simply great looking around handsfree :) Meaning, like it's supposed to be.

Nobody knows...
The question has been raised a couple of times before.
But... I wouldn't bet on it. They would have to introduce a whole new viewing system, but I'm ready to be pleasantly surprised.

It wouldn't be too different from the F8 view system already in place (as far as view system goes), so maybe it's possible.

I have not tried TrackIR, but it sounds great.

If you want to check your six, how far do you turn your head?

There are many ways and techniques to get the most out of TrackIR. Some don't turn their heads but simply lean, and sensitivity can be adjusted. Most people will find a way that works for them... and it does work GREAT! I intensely recommend it!

F8 view system... (I have all my commands programmed into my stick) is that padlock?

Not padlock, but it's a fluid movement... a full panning view, as opposed to the Snap views with F7 (45°, 90°, 135°, etc.)

I was lucky to try a flight with the Track IR (playing FB) when I was visiting Finland for the Mosquito Meeting.

It's extremely easy to get used to. I was able to track manouvering bandits pretty much from the time I was in front of the screen, without having to concentrate on how to move my head. Actually I was having more trouble getting use to the different stick than the Track IR.

Now with the free beer and all I can't really remember how far I had to move the head to check six (or as far as FB allows anyway), but if I was 2 feet from the screen I would guess it was done by turning my head from the center of the screen to approx. the edge. I still could see the whole screen with both eyes I remember. If I combined by both turning and leaning a bit it was less.

It's a bit like the F8 view, but the F8 view is much to slow for Track IR and you can't use the mouse to change view.

We brought this up to HT at the con ... He's not technically familar with the product, but explaining it to him seemed to peak his interest.

I would think that once AH II has flattened all its bugs/nuances, he might probably would take a look at it. The bright side ... he didn't say NO !!!

Does anybody know where to get the developmental APIs specs that one would need to write the interface ... kinda like a "Developers Pack" ?

On the TrakIR website (http://www.trackir.com) they encourage people to ask for the SDK by writing to: trackirsdk@naturalpoint.com

Hope this helps!

I cant help but think that the track IR folks would be crazy but to be very helpful in getting AH support....its a built in base of hard core dweebs....Id surmise that at least 100 fools in here would consider the purchase with native support.

With the price now near $100 (what is it $130 or so...I remmeber when it was over $250)....its no longer one of those 'elite only' kind of things....the average joe can get a buck fifty together...if he wants too:D

Exactly!  Like me, I'm not average at all.  According to my parents and the teachers I had when growing up, I'm 'special'.

I too am very interested in TrackIR support.  I've been on AH hiatus for a couple months now, waiting for something new, and this would really be a tremendous addition.

(ps, that's paid hiatus, jerkies, so no grief!)

How far you have to turn your head depends on the trackIR speedsettings. Which everybody can set to his own preference. The faster you set the panning speeds, the less you have to turn your head to check 6. I like faster speedsettings myself.

As an example,  imagine my settings as such that i can check six by looking at  the left or right side of my 17" monitor while i sit about 2 feet away from it.

So i guess for me very slight  real headmovment already means big virtual headmovement. But still, the sensation is as if you turn your head all the way back.
Hard to explain but it really feels like that.

edit:

btw it can run in either 1 of 2 modes,
1. mouse emulation mode
2. enhanced mode

enhanced mode would be the preferred method because the Naturalpoint software has some extra features for this mode and it remembers which way is forward.  Centre it once, and you can even leave your seat come back and it will remember which way was forward.

But i guess  for enhanced mode support to be built in, it would require combined effort from both Naturalpoint and Hightechcreations.
